How to Find and Farm Emeralds in Minecraft

Emeralds are essential for any Minecraft survivalist. An Emerald in Minecraft is used as a currency to buy and trade items between Villagers or even the Wandering Trader. Below we have put together how to find and farm Emeralds in Minecraft. Let´s take a look!

How to Find Emeralds in Minecraft

How to Find Emeralds in Minecraft

Emeralds can be found in many different places. Let’s take a look at the top three areas, in which you can decide which works better for you!

Trade with Villagers in Minecraft

The best way to find Emeralds is to trade items like wool, string, coal, or other blocks with Villagers for Emeralds. You can find villagers in any spawned Minecraft village throughout the different biomes in Minecraft. Trading with villagers is also a great way to farm Emeralds if you are also in need of a large amount.

Trade with Villagers

You can also use Emeralds to trade with villagers for enchanted books for armor and tools. This is a very useful currency once you have the supplies to trade for it!

The easiest villagers to trade with are the Armorer, Toolsmith, and Weaponsmith. All of which can trade 15 coal for 1 emerald. Coal is easy to achieve with mining in Minecraft, and be easily found in large numbers. Although, villagers do have a limit. So if you end up having all three of these types of villagers, you can trade up to 16 times from each villager. Making a total of 48 emeralds a day. Of course, you can achieve a higher amount with other villagers with other types of items, but it may cost more to your overall inventory to do so.

When trading with villagers, make sure to always ensure that they can replenish their trade items, by placing them near the proper job blocks.

Mine for Emeralds in Minecraft

Mining for Emeralds in Minecraft is not as common as trading with villagers and could be a bit difficult to come by. Emeralds can only be mined in mountain biomes. You can see Emeralds anywhere inside or surrounding the edges of the mountain. Although, make sure you are using Fortune III to your pickaxe to ensure proper mining of this gem. This will allow you to mine more Emeralds, and have much more quantity than if using a simple iron pickaxe!

Make sure to only use an iron pickaxe or diamond. Any pickaxe standard below these will result in damaging the Emeralds, thus never being able to mine them and losing numbers of gems!

Typically if you are entering a cave on the mountain, you will start finding Emeralds pretty quickly. Due to the cave and cliff’s updates to the world, you can typically find them from the elevation of Y = 236.

Loot Buried Treasure Chest in Minecraft

The least popular option is to loot buried treasure chests. These are typically very difficult to find in Minecraft and require a bit of search and discovery. The option can take a lot of time from your hands, and ultimately lose even more time to focus on other things to upgrade your survival stats in the world.

Loot Buried Treasure Chest

Although, if you do find a buried treasure chest, you will receive the most amount of Emeralds in one find than you would in any other option of finding Emeralds in Minecraft. Typically, buried treasure can hold up to 4-8 Emeralds at once. This is up to a 50% chance of discovery as well, making the find not that rare compared to what you might think.

Finding these chests is the frustrating part, as you must dive into underwater shipwrecks, loot the chests inside of the shipwreck, and use the treasure maps that are found in these chests, to find the buried treasure. This is a tedious process. You can also find Emeralds at these locations:

  • Desert Temples
  • Village Chests
  • Underwater Ruins
  • Jungle Temples
  • Igloos
  • End City

It is not as popular or guaranteed to find Emeralds in these above locations, but they are definitely worth looking into!
