Minecraft is a fantastic game that I first played in 2010 and it was love at first sight – the simplicity of everything, my first dirt house, murdering cows with my bare fists, and fighting off hordes of zombies at night. It took me a while to understand that without proper lighting, zombies may spawn in your house and cause absolute havoc!
After a while I realized that zombie mods would fit Minecraft perfectly and I thought to myself, why not write an article about the best zombie mods in Minecraft? Now that the intro is out of the way, let’s get into our first mod:
Mob Sunscreen

Traditionally, zombies and other mobs begin to burn during daylight, they result in hiding in caves and other areas that will protect them from the sun. With this mod, on the other hand, that mechanic gets completely removed and different zombie variants roam during the daytime without worrying about taking burning damage. This makes the game a lot more challenging and greatly endangers local villages&residents, especially when no iron golems are available.
Of course, zombies, skeletons, and other mobs won’t spawn during day time, only during the night. Keep in mind that some areas could become infested with hostile mobs if you choose to do nothing about them!
Zombie Awareness

The point of this mod is to greatly improve the AI of zombies. Normal zombies can be pretty dumb and they lose interest in you relatively fast but with this mod, you’ll have to tip-toe everywhere you go and get seriously overwhelmed if you don’t know what you’re doing.
That’s why I prepared a list of things to watch out for after you installed this mod:
- After getting hit by a hostile mob, you’ll spill some blood on the ground, which will attract other zombies to your location
- Making sounds such as opening doors, eating, placing blocks, mining, or even pressing a lever will result in zombies searching for you
- Overly lit areas attract zombies, this applies to your house as well
- Zombies spawn in groups&can gather into groups and are more of a serious threat than before
- Zombies have random movement speeds, making them unpredictable
Rotten Creatures

One of Best Minecraft Zombie Mods that adds extra zombie creatures to the game. They are much more detailed than vanilla zombies and can be found in different biomes. They don’t just brainlessly attack you but can also apply debuffs on attacks – causing you to freeze, for example.
The mod is pretty good and adds plenty of variety to the zombies, forcing you to strategize. I’ll mention some of the zombie variants and describe their abilities to give you a better idea:
- Mummy – Spawns in desert biomes, applies Hunger debuff to players, spawns beetles to attack the player after death
- Swampy – Will charge at you, apply poison&blindness during successful attacks, thrives in the swamp biome, and gets a movement speed in the water
- Burned – There are 3 different variants with many special abilities, with them mostly starting in the Nether.
These are just 3 examples and there are more zombie models that you should try for yourself. An awesome mod!
7 Days To Mine

7 Days To Mine completely transforms Minecraft into a zombie survival game. The crafting system is changed and firing weapons are now added to the game. You’ll be wandering through abandoned cities filled with zombies and scavenging for supplies, trying to prepare for deadly nights that will test your capabilities.
This mod is based on a game called 7 Days To Die and it’s fair to say that the creator nailed the idea pretty well. You should try it out and see if you like it!
Zombie Extreme

This mod does a great job of terraforming your world into a truly apocalyptic hellhole. You’ll be able to travel through cities filled with abandoned(or not-so-abandoned) stores and houses, which may have containers with different types of loot.
The mod also adds armor that you can wear, as well as zombies. This further increases immersion and diversifies zombies.
Besides armor, you can also enjoy 24 weapons, 6 of which are handguns. They are scattered in containers throughout the city, keep in mind that you’ll need ammunition for your newly found firearms!
Overall, a cool mod. The gray weather combined with abandoned cities and a new biome creates the perfect atmosphere of dread and isolation, forcing you to feel paranoid at all times!
Epic Siege Mod

Probably one of my favorite mods out there, simply because hostile mobs are no longer stupid and they will MAKE SURE to annihilate everything in their path. Mobs become more deadly and smarter, capable of exterminating villages and destroying player-made bases.
You can expect:
- Creepers can now ride other creatures
- Creeper explosion causes fire to spread
- Skeletons become a lot more accurate with their bows
- Endermen can teleport you to different locations
- Smarter AI
- Zombies detect you a lot more effectively
- Underground&water bases are less effective, as hostile mobs can swim underwater and dig their way through
A challenging mod that will fill you with dread each time you go to the surface. You will no longer feel safe inside your house and fight off hordes of zombies trying to break through your walls!
Simply Zombies
This mod is nothing too complicated, it’s about increasing the number of zombies and removing mobs such as Creepers, Spiders, or Skeletons. Don’t worry, the zombies will be able to drop gunpowder, strings, spider eyes, and other items.
This mod is similar to the Mob Sunscreen mod, as zombies will also not receive damage from the sun during day time. It creates an apocalyptic atmosphere with hungry zombies lurking around!
