There are many mobs to encounter in Minecraft, both friendly and hostile. There are quite a few to encounter in each world. The villagers are just one group among them that we can engage with. Their infant form, the baby villager, usually shows up too.
Baby villagers can spawn with the village or be created afterward. They then grow up, which unlocks a lot more options for them. Let’s see how long it takes for a baby villager to grow up in Minecraft.
Villager
Villagers are the most noticeable neutral mobs in Minecraft. These mobs can be found throughout villages, small settlements of pre-generated houses, and gardens. You can easily find a few in each world, with different layouts to explore and loot.
Most of the villagers you find will be fully grown ones. These stand around and do one of many things. For example, sharing food, gossiping, and sometimes breeding. When two villagers breed, they spawn a villager baby. These are smaller and quite limited in what they can do.
How long does it take baby villagers to grow
You can find the baby villager mobs in villages where regular villagers can be found. They have a similar design to villagers, with the two differences being their height and the fact that baby villagers have much bigger heads compared to their bodies.
A baby villager will take about 20 minutes to grow to adulthood. The first stage of a baby villagers growth will happen within the first few minutes of their birth. They are the smallest at this stage and must continue to grow.
The next stage may increase the villager somewhat, occurring during the last 8 to 10 minutes of its lifespan. Then, in the final stage, they will finally create a full-grown villager.
Before becoming a villager, the baby has a few benefits. It cannot be attacked by raiders such as illagers and will not be focused on attacks. This means avoiding many threats that could come its way in less hospitable worlds.
Breeding
The breeding process in Minecraft is a bit complex. It will require two villagers and beds with empty blocks above them. The process doesn’t stop there, though.
A villager must be willing to breed, which is mandated by the amount of food they have. Once the appropriate amount of food has been reached, they will be considered willing to breed. This can be achieved by a villager having one of the following stacks of foods:
- 3 bread
- 12 carrots
- 12 potatoes
- 12 beetroots
Any one of these stacks is enough to render a villager willing to breed, which a player can trigger by throwing items at them.
However, we still need those beds. If villagers decide to breed but find no bed within 48 blocks of them, they will leave each other dissatisfied.
Villager baby behavior
The baby villagers will be quite unbothered by the world, acting quite differently from the usual villager. They sprint around from one place to another with little care for their surroundings. Running into any building available and jumping on beds.
Often, you can see them stare at other mobs. Villagers and iron golems specifically, and the player isn’t exempt from baby villagers flocking around them. In addition, baby villagers will often group together to play.
While hostile mobs cannot hurt baby villagers until they grow after 20 minutes, they can still be struck by lightning. If they get hit by lightning, the baby villagers will turn into witches. The only difference is that these witches will be shorter than regular ones.
Modify spawn
If you want to change the spawn frequency of this type of villager, you can do so via the command line. The command line will provide us with the ability to do so. By typing the appropriate commands, we can make the necessary mobs spawn. These can be anything from regular villagers, food that will make them willing, or even baby villagers outright.
/summon minecraft:villager ~ ~ ~ {Age:-1200} (Grows up in 60 seconds)
/summon minecraft:villager ~ ~ ~ {Age:-6000} (Grows up in 5 minutes)
Of course, if you end up using commands to alter the behavior of villagers, you’ll often need cheats enabled. Whether the changes are positive or negative for us, the commands will be enabled this way.
