Minecraft Turtle Guide: Drops, Behavior and Attacks

Minecraft Turtle Guide

Beaches are quite low on mobs. Owing to their overall lack of proper vegetation or any blocks that may provide more intriguing interactions with the world. Although hostile mobs will spawn on them all the same during the night, passive mobs aren’t present, aside from a few that stumble into the biome. One mob that lives here natively is the turtle. Turtles can be found throughout beaches engaging in their standard behavior and laying eggs when two breed. Check out what makes turtles unique in this overview of the Minecraft turtle.

Turtle

Minecraft turtle is a common passive mob that appears in beach biomes but can sometimes edge towards oceans due to its overall vicinity. These mobs are simple and common enough to see about the beach every once in a while. Additionally, they count as aquatic mobs, which does make them susceptible to any effects that may take into account this classification.

Turtles do not spawn on snowy beaches or stony shores. It will only spawn on sandy beaches while there’s daylight. These mobs spawn in groups of 5, with a 10% chance that some of the turtles spawned will appear as babies.

Bedrock Edition slightly changes this rule, where the turtles will spawn in groups of 2 to 6 instead. With some extra requirements in terms of layers, they need to be on.

Turtle Behavior

As expected, turtles can move through both water and land. In Minecraft, they are capable swimmers, which makes them much faster in water. If they are in the water, their behavior will be quite simple as they wander about aimlessly. However, they will try to move toward a nearby water source on land. The turtles are keener on sticking close to these areas, especially if they are about to breed.

Turtles aren’t affected by leads. If you wish to move a turtle about and have it follow you, it’s possible to use seagrass. Hold it 10 blocks away from the turtle, and it will come after.

Additionally, turtles will be targets for some of the mobs in the world. Aside from the standard assortment of hostile mobs that may find themselves near the turtle, this list also includes ocelots, wolves, cats, and foxes. However, these mobs only attack baby turtles instead of adults.

It’s also possible to breed these mobs by feeding two nearby turtles with seagrass. The turtle has a unique detail to its breeding process where the pregnant one will return to its home beach before laying the eggs. The mob will remember the block it was spawned on and always return to it to lay eggs. It will need to place the eggs on sand blocks that are placed above water.

Turtle Drops

Turtles drop 0 to 2 seagrass in Minecraft. The amount of this drop increases with Looting and will add 1 extra max drop per level of this enhancement. This goes up to 5.

The turtle will also drop a bowl but only if it is killed by lightning. Lightning that hits the turtle immediately kills it.

Lastly, the baby turtle drops a scute when it grows from baby to adult. This is the only way to obtain this specific material.
