In Minecraft, certain mobs will only appear when another effect spawns them. These effects can be anything from fulfilled conditions to being exclusively used as summons. Vex is one such summon, with its presence in the world dictated by another mob.
Vex
Vex are flying hostile mobs in Minecraft. These little flyers are equipped with an iron sword and can phase through walls. Being able to fly and go through walls is just about enough in terms of their capabilities. Making them insanely good at chasing players down. They are also incapable of spawning on their lonesome, requiring Evokers to summon them.
The updated model for Vex looks like another mob, the Allay. Instead of being a hostile flying gray mob like Vexes, Allays are passive and will bring items to the player in their vicinity. Allays are blue and flying mobs who constantly twirl around while idle.
Vex Summoning
One of the spells the Evoker knows involves summoning Vexes that help this casting mob in combat. The Vex will spawn after a visual and audio cue of the spawning. There will be three Vexes spawned near the Evoker in Minecraft when this spell concludes. It’s also possible for Evokers to summon extra mobs if Vexes summoned by the previous spell survive.
Vex Behavior
As the Vex spawns, it will start targeting players, adult villagers, Iron Golems, and wandering traders. The Evoker can make Vexes hostile towards some other mobs, which can cause Evoker’s hostility by hitting it with an attack accidentally. Vex can fly through blocks with ease which include water and lava. Vexes take no damage going through blocks, even when going through lava. Interestingly enough, these phasing powers allow it to go through bedrock as well.
Unique interactions Vexes have with blocks are with slime and honey blocks. Slime blocks bounce the Vex away, while honey ones slow these mobs down. It’s useful as a way to avoid Vexes for a bit.
When not engaged in combat, Vex looks through the area attempting to find something to fight. After 30 to 119 seconds, Vex will start taking damage passively. After losing all of their health, the Vex will die.
Vex Attacks
An attack from Vex will be well-choreographed. These attacks make the Vex turn red for a bit before actually lunging forward in an attack. If it connects, the player will take 9 damage on normal difficulty. Disarming the Vex in any way will not change its damage. Even without an iron sword, it deals 9 damage.
Vex Drops
Although Vex wields an iron sword, it will not drop it in Minecraft Java Edition. Their main hand drop chance is set to 0, which makes it incapable of dropping it. This makes them generally lootless, only dropping 5 points worth of experience.
However, the Bedrock Edition enables the Vex to drop the iron sword. This iron sword has a chance to drop, and when it does, its durability will be determined at random.
